The Canon And The Modern Day Student - 1736 Words

The literary Canon has been a topic debated for many years. Whether to cut it from the school curriculum or to keep it in the curriculum to teach children messages from timeless classic novels. It has been argued for many years if novels such as Of Mice and Men and One Flew over the Cuckoo’s nest are classics and should be involved in the canon. These two classics involve a number of messages that the modern day student should learn to take on the outside world. The novels outline messages such as hope, determination, independence and being equal. This is why Literature has the power to highlight injustice and provide a voice to the marginalised. On the contrary ‘Of Mice and Men’ and ‘ One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nestâ€⠄¢ are considered a classics because of it ground-breaking context and messages. In the novel ‘Of mice and men’ written by john Steinbeck is set in the mid-1930s in California at the end of the Americans great depression. It is a story written about a two men, George and Lennie, who have an unbreakable bond and their journey together. They end up at a ranch working with some other men and run into trouble as Lennie doesn’t know his own strength and from right from wrong. This book has made ground breaking status all over the world, for the themes, symbols and messages it holds. Just like one flew over the Cuckoo’s nest which was written by Ken Kesey set in the 1950s, in a mental institute in Oregon. This is a story told about patients in the institute, having a bond with each other to overrule a dominant person in all their life’s which is run by women and it holds messages, themes and symbols that make it ground breaking and have shaped society in to what is today. Of mice and men have so many themes and messages throughout the novel it shows themes of nature of human existence which is an example of them being lonely and isolated.
